The Sri Lanka Daily News reports hopes for Rizana's release

'Enouraging Talks'

A Sri Lankan team led by Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana left for Saudi Arabia on Wednesday to seek clemency for Sri Lankan housemaid Rizana Nafeek who has spent the last six years in death row in Saudi Arabia.

The Governor held encouraging discussions on Thursday with the parents and relatives of the infant who is alleged to have died under Nafeek's care.

A press release by the secretariat of the Western Province Governor said the Governor, who telephoned President Mahinda Rajapaksa from Saudi Arabia and offered him birthday greetings yesterday, has said there is some progress in their untiring efforts and they hoped that they could obtain Rizana's release before long.

Rizana Nafeek is a young Sri Lankan immigrant maid who has been sentenced to be beheaded in Saudi Arabia.

She was left in charge of a baby, who choked to death, and Rizana was accused of murder.

Rizana was 17 at the time, couldn't speak the language & had an unfair trial...
